BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.

 

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The financial capabilities intern is a volunteer position to support the IRC in NY’s financial education program. This program aims to increase financial literacy of participants, provide them with financial coaching and access to low interest loans. This program aims to empower participants and boost their confidence to handle their personal finances. The Financial Coaching intern will support the program by providing financial coaching and counseling services to program participants, while also coordinating monthly financial education workshops for all IRC clients. The intern will also engage in outreach to external organizations as well putting together loan packages for clients. The ideal candidates will have prior experience in the field of personal financial management, preferably in a counseling or coaching role. Due to the nature of the program, the financial coaching intern will need to volunteer for set office hours every week and should be available for a minimum of ten hours per week and up to fifteen, if possible.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Intern will learn how to effectively manage financial education and coaching program. Intern will learn how to provide direct services to immigrant populations. Intern will learn how to instruct courses to English Language Learners.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide one-on-one financial coaching and counseling for clients.
  • Conduct financial management intakes and surveys for all clients.
  • Track client meetings and progress in spreadsheet and through case noting on ETO software.
  • Facilitate monthly financial literacy/education workshops for clients.
  • Develop database of financial resources for clients.
  • Work in conjunction with the Economic Empowerment specialist to develop relationships with financial institutions and organizations providing financial services in NYC.
  • Communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Collaborate with other IRC in NY programs as necessary
  • Adhere to IRC policies, particularly those related to confidentiality and client privacy.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • The ideal candidate will have experience in providing coaching or counseling services, preferably in personal financial management.
  • Experience working with immigrants or refugees in a social service setting
  • Experience providing instruction to adults a plus
  • Must have good written and verbal English language skills
  • Ability to fluently speak at least one of the following languages (Farsi/Dari, Arabic, Spanish, French, Burmese, Mandarin, Russian, Urdu) preferred
  • Must be willing to work varied hours
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Access and Word, E-mail)
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Adhere to professional standards of confidentiality and boundary-setting

 

This position reports to the Financial Coach.
