Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is anchored on a fundamental vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. This vision has been the driving force in all of Habitat’s actions and activities and has seen HFHI helping more than 29 million people around the world build or improve the place they call home. To further fulfil this vision, Habitat for Humanity International established the Terwilliger Centre for Innovation in Shelter (Terwilliger Centre) to Build and Expand Inclusive Housing Markets by supporting local firms to innovate and expand client-responsive services and products. The Terwilliger Centre understands that the role of local markets is critical in closing adequate housing gaps among the low-income and incremental market segment. The Terwilliger Centre strives to make markets work more effectively for low-income people in need of decent, affordable housing.
Project Overview
Habitat for Humanity is currently implementing a 3-year project on Driving Green Growth in the Construction Sector; funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE) programme. The project is being implemented in Kenya and co-designed between Habitat for Humanity, consortium partners, other sector partners and youth working both in formal and informal sections of the housing sector. It will apply market systems development approach to facilitate housing firms and relevant stakeholders to link youth to decent green jobs through three interconnected change objectives:
1. Create, match, and improve 908 green jobs for youth in the construction sector, of which 34% for women.
2. Increase demand, supply and utilization of green housing products and services.
3. Increase meaningful participation of women and youth in the construction sector.
Purpose and Objectives of the Assignment
The project wishes to engage a skilled communications consultant to provide technical support to enhance its communication strategies and outreach efforts to the three years challenge fund for youth employment project. The consultant will play a crucial role in developing and implementing communication plans to effectively convey key messages to implementing partners, stakeholders, and the public. The consultant will work closely with Habitat for Humanity’s global/ regional offices and relevant departments and other project partners to offer expert advice and support in the development and execution of comprehensive communication plans to promote the organization’s mission, vision, and initiatives.
The key objectives of this assignment will be:
1. Support CFYE project partners to develop communication plans that guide on development and dissemination of project communication materials targeted to implementing partners, stakeholders, and the public.
2. Create compelling content for various communication channels, including press releases, website content, social media posts, and newsletters.
Tasks and responsibilities
1. Conduct a thorough assessment of the current project communication strategies / plans and materials.
2. Develop a detailed communication strategy / plan aligned with project objectives, the organizations’ goals and target audience.
3. Provide guidance on branding and messaging to ensure consistency across all communication materials.
4. Collaborate with internal teams to coordinate communication efforts and support organizational objectives.
5. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication activities and recommend adjustments as necessary.
6. Provide training and capacity building for the implementing partners on effective communication techniques and best practices.
7. Provide high quality photographs of activities and key events to be used in reports, online articles, and public relations materials.
8. Record and edit narration/voice over for the videos as needed.
9. Manage the full production process including concept creation, script writing in close consultation with the communication department, photography, videography, editing, audio balancing, sub-titling, format exportation, archiving raw and edited work and.
10. Provide video and other communications coverage of various implementation activities from the implementing partners.
Deliverables
1. Inception report.
2. Workplan and dissemination plan
3. Partner communication plans and support schedule.
4. Partner specific communication materials and procedures.
5. Draft project report
6. Final Consultancy Report
Duration
The consultancy will be 12 calendar weeks. This represents calendar period and not consultancy days.
Experience and qualification.
The assignment will be performed by an expert with the following qualification:
1. Advanced University degree in Communication, marketing, or related field.
2. Extensive work experience and proven record in communications, marketing, advocacy, policy, campaigns, and strategic management.
3. Demonstrate prior experience in developing a communications strategy, ideally in the development context.
4. Proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies, preferably in a similar context.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
6. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
7. Familiarity with digital communication tools and social media platforms.
8. Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
9. Understanding of Market Systems approaches and experience working with housing programs is an added advantage.
