UNDP has been working in Afghanistan for more than 50 years on climate change and resilience, gender, governance, health, livelihoods, and rule of law. Under the broader framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in close coordination with other UN agencies, UNDP is supporting the Afghan people’s aspiration for peace, prosperity, and sustainability. UNDP is currently implementing its flagship crisis response programme, ABADEI (Area Based Approach to Development Emergency Initiatives), as part of the ongoing UN-led response to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and the breakdown of Afghanistan’s economy following the August 2021 shift in power. Key priorities that govern or provide direction for the position’s work to show the link between the Unit priorities and position priorities/expected outcomes of an incumbent. The General Services Unit within the Operational pillar of the CO is responsible for the efficient, transparent, and cost-effective delivery of Administrative, Premises, Asset Management, and Logistics services in support of the Programme and CO operations which also includes support to other UN Agencies.

The ABADEI Strategy is a tailored area-based integrated programming approach to support basic human needs, complementing short-term humanitarian life-saving assistance with the safeguarding of livelihood and the strengthening of community resilience. It is centered around addressing worsening poverty and vulnerability, supporting community resilience and social cohesion, addressing climatic vulnerability, and enabling the rehabilitation of small-scale infrastructure vital for basic human needs. It supports the creation of immediate sources of income through vocational skills training, cash-for-work (CfW), cash- for -market (CfM), small businesses, and livelihood opportunities with a particular focus on agri-business and regenerative agriculture infrastructure and services (critical for food security) that are under threat. It is sensitive to the chronic and newly emerging vulnerabilities of Afghan women and girls and aims at providing them assistance in a manner that does not exacerbate their susceptibility to violence and deprivation of opportunities and rights.
Under the overall guidance of the ABADEI Programme Manager, and with direct supervision from the ABADEI Project Analyst the GIS and AIMS Data Analytics Expert will work in close coordination with the project management unit members. S/He will be responsible for providing technical support to the team through GIS mapping and data analytics. The incumbent will also work closely with partners, UN Agencies, technical advisors, and experts to help implement activities. The GIS and AIMS Data Analytics Expert responsibilities include GIS mapping, support with coordinates preparations and verification In ABADEI Information Management System (AIMS), data collecting and data cleaning and supporting with knowledge building in the ABADEI team.
Duties & Responsibilities
Scope of work:
The GIS and AIMS Data Analytics Expert will undertake the following to ensure the success of the project:
Key Responsibilities:
1. Perform geo-spatial analysis to support a systematic analytical approach..
2. Develop and maintain geographic databases including satellite imagery.
3. Provide technical expertise and guidance to the ABADEI team regarding GIS and data analytics.
4. Verifying activity coordinates in the ABADEI Information Management System (AIMS)
5. Capture the necessary projects coordinates related to those under UNDP/AFG ABADEI portfolio implemented whether old, ongoing or new and store them in GIS database.
6. Collecting new data from different sources, including field visits, and cleaning of the data
7. Assist in developing information products to support scenario development, contingency planning and the identification of trends and risks.
8. Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing and provide guidance within UNDP and ABADEI.
Institutional arrangement: Under the overall guidance of the ABADEI Programme Manager, and with direct supervision from the ABADEI Project Analyst the GIS and AIMS Data Analytics Expert will work in close coordination with the project management unit members.
Payment: Monthly bases
Travel Cost and DSA: The salary is inclusive of travel cost and DSA.

Duty station: Kabul, Afghanistan.
Job Requirements
Experience and Skills:
1. 3 years of experience with master’s degree or equivalent in GIS/Geoinformatics/Remote Sensing, Data Science or any related field or 7 years Bachelor’s degree.
2. Expertise in programming and coding; ability to handle large scale and diverse datasets and translate them into structured information.
3. Technical Skills on ArcGIS, QGIS, Image Processing programs, Python, SQL and MS Office Package is a requirement.
4. Excellent technical writing skills and ability to produce high quality results reports and papers.
5. Excellent communication, relationship skills and a strong team player
6. Previous work experience with UN agencies is an asset.
