Job Summary

Project Background:

Sustainable Energy Services for Education and Health in Afghanistan (SESEHA) of UNDP supports adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in public facilities (primarily in health and education sectors) for sustained delivery of essential services for basic human needs in Afghanistan. This project contributes to better energy access and enables improvements in basic energy supply services in the stated sectors.

The project is aligned with UNDP’s signature solution on Energy and is further conceptualized in the priority area of sustained essential services of the UN’s Strategic Framework for Afghanistan 2023-2025 that directly contributes to the two outcomes: Outcome 1: By the end of 2025, more people in Afghanistan, particularly the most vulnerable and marginalized, including women and girls have their basic human needs progressively met through the sustained delivery of essential services. Outcome 2: By the end of 2025, people in Afghanistan, especially women, youth, and other marginalized groups, and those at risk of being left behind benefit from a more equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient employment-rich economy and shared economic opportunities with enhanced productive capacities for improved livelihoods and decent work.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of GIS Specialist, the GIS Consultant will provide support in spatial data and analysis. S/he will support the spatial analysis of the project sites, map production for the identification, and evaluation of the project.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

The consultant will work closely with the project officer and line manager to support the activities implementation and perform the following tasks:

• Data Collection, Entry and Management: Input field data and manage spatial data into GIS System, ensuring quality, accuracy and consistency of the data.

• Spatial Analysis: Conduct and perform basic spatial analysis tasks such as overlay analysis, buffer creation, and spatial querying under the guidance of GIS analysts.

• Map Production: Assist in creating maps and visualizations using GIS software to present data in a clear and understandable manner.

• GIS Quality Assurance: Perform quality checks on spatial data to ensure completeness and accuracy.

• GIS Documentation: Maintain documentation of data sources, procedures, and workflows for future reference.

• Technical Support: Assist in acquiring geographic data relevant to specific projects initiatives such as the satellite imagery, surveys, and fieldwork.

• Perform any other official task assigned by the GIS Specialist or any other management of the project

Skills:

Language:

• Working knowledge of English

• Working knowledge of Pashto and Dari languages required.

Functional Competencies:

• Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms, including data entry, manipulation, and basic analysis capabilities.

• Attention to detail with Strong attention to detail for ensuring accuracy in data entry, analysis, and map production.

• Fieldwork, depending on fieldwork for data collection purposes as may be required.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Years of experience:

• At least 1-3 years of relevant field experience in Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing and spatial tools.

Job Location:

• Kabul

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in the area of Geography, Urban Planning, Environmental Science and related Geospatial Science.
