Context of the Organization
With a network of 191 National Societies (NSs), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the biggest humanitarian organization in the world. In order to prevent and lessen human suffering and so contribute to the preservation and advancement of human dignity and international peace, the IFRC’s overarching goal is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities with NSs.” Before, during, and after catastrophes, medical emergencies, and other crises, IFRC strives to address the needs and enhance the lives of those who are most in need.
Along with its member National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), IFRC is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement). Humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteer service, unity, and universality are the core values that underpin IFRC’s activities.
With its headquarters located in Geneva, Switzerland, the IFRC is headed by its Secretary General. Three primary divisions comprise the headquarters: (i) Operations Coordination and National Society Development; (ii) Global Relations, Humanitarian Diplomacy, and Digitalization; and (iii) Management Policy, Strategy, and Corporate Services.
In Africa, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and the Americas, IFRC maintains five regional offices. Additionally, IFRC has national delegations and country cluster delegations all throughout the world. The IFRC Secretariat is made up of the field structure (regional, cluster, and country) and the Geneva Headquarters.
Sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment and other forms of harassment, abuse of power, discrimination, and lack of integrity (including but not limited to financial misconduct) are all prohibited by the IFRC as behaviors that are incompatible with the goals and objectives of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The IFRC also follows stringent guidelines for protecting children.
