Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This position is located at the UNON Joint Medical Services (JMS), Nairobi duty station. The JMS Health and Wellness intern will report to the JMS Medical Officer. The Joint Medical Services (JMS) internship is for 6 months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Under direct supervision of the JMS Medical Officer, the intern will assist the program manager in the implementation of the JMS Wellness programme and specifically perform the following duties under guidance: • Assist in the preparation of health and wellness communication tools. • Assist in health promotion and outreach activities focused on staff wellness. The JMS intern will participate in healthy U campaigns, fitness promotion activities and group challenge activities. • Assist in providing administrative support for wellness activities. • Assist in promoting awareness on healthy nutrition and providing support for nutrition -based wellness activities. • Assist in disseminating health awareness content through the JMS website, online newsletter articles and social media platforms. • Assist in data collection and data analytics, including support to research activities, monitoring and evaluation of JMS wellness and related programmes, supporting surveys and interviews, report writing, and presentation of recommendations. • Assist in promoting public health awareness and supporting JMS interventions for prevention & control of infectious disease outbreaks. • Assist with administrative support for the HIV Workplace programme including support for the annual UN Run, Children’s HIV training and other programmatic activities. • Utilization of the activities and experiences contemplated in this role to learn, to be engaged and to gain the core skills as per the learning objectives of the sponsoring college / institution. • Perform any other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: The Health and Wellness intern should be a final year undergraduate, graduate student or recent graduate in the fields of Nutrition, Public Health, Wellness studies, Health communications or related fields of study. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
