Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The internship with the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) aims to provide hands-on experience in urban planning for water resilience. The intern will support the Planning Finance and Economy Section by assisting in data collection, (spatial) analysis, and preparation of technical documents related to global and national policies, and integrated water planning, finance and management in urban settings. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to global and local projects that address social inclusion, climate adaptation, blue economy, and sustainable urban development. Through active participation in various tasks, the intern will gain a comprehensive understanding of UN frameworks and agendas on climate change, water, and sustainable, resilient and inclusive urbanization. This experience will enhance their professional skills and provide insights into the workings of United Nations Programme dedicated to promoting localization of Sustainable Development Goals and in particular sustainable cities and communities (SDG11). Responsibilities • The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of Planning, Finance and Economy Section and will undertake the following duties: • Supporting the development of the technical and normative outputs of the Planning, Finance and Economy Section by assisting in gathering data, analyzing, contributing to preparation of reports and technical documents, preparation of presentations and other dissemination materials. • Support the task force of on Water and Cities and other teams at the Section, such as the Urban Lab, Urban Regeneration, and Public Space. • Support the study on strategies and approaches to strengthen UN-Habitat’s position on Water and Cities. • Support the capacity building on a variety of planning themes.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: Area of Study: Urban Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Policy, Geography, Architecture, or related field that is relevant for sustainable urban development and urban planning and design. • Currently pursuing or attained advanced degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Journalism, Communications, Graphic Design (Master or PhD candidate preferable). • Knowledge and good presentation and graphic design skills (Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc). • Familiarity with digital communication strategies and knowledge of social media platforms. • Experience and knowledge on urban planning is highly valued. • Portfolio of work (please add a link in the Cover Letter). However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
