Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women is the central stakeholder in advancing global norms and standards for gender equality and the empowerment of women. The UN Women Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECARO), established in Istanbul, Türkiye, in early 2014, supports national gender machineries and cooperates with UN and public, private, and community-level non-UN institutions to empower women and advance gender equality across the region.

Countries in Europe and Central Asia have made significant strides in promoting gender equality, despite facing economic challenges and traditional gender stereotypes that limit women’s full participation in political and economic life. UN Women focuses on priority areas that are fundamental to women’s equality and can unlock progress across the board. The key areas of work include:

Women’s Leadership and Political Participation: Promoting women’s leadership and participation in all spheres of life, working with national governments, civil society, and international actors.
Economic Empowerment: Enhancing women’s economic empowerment by promoting their ability to secure decent jobs, accumulate assets, and influence institutions and public policies.
Ending Violence Against Women: Addressing the root causes of violence, raising awareness, and ensuring gender-sensitive protection services for survivors.
Peace and Security: Enabling women’s participation and influence in all aspects of peace and security and humanitarian action to prevent and resolve conflicts and ensure access to justice and protection from discrimination and human rights violations.
Gender-Responsive Planning and Budgeting: Advocating for transparent national planning and budgeting that provides adequate public financing for gender equality.
And other key functional areas such as:
