Job Description:
Perform and monitor accurate, timely, and reliable clinical laboratory tests (biochemistry, hematology, blood bank coordination, basic microbiology, and point-of-care testing) for pediatric cardiac surgery, ICU, and inpatient care; ensure quality control, sample tracking, and adherence to laboratory safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Specimen Receipt and Registration : Receive, register, and prioritize specimens; verify patient identity, proper specimen labeling, specimen integrity, and urgency prior to processing.
- Perform routine and emergency tests : Tests required for cardiac service such as CBC/blood slide, PT/INR/aPTT, blood group and crossmatch, electrolytes/kidney and liver panels, ABG/blood gas analysis and other agreed chemistry and hematology tests.
- Operate and maintain analyzers and POCT devices : Perform start-up checks, calibration, basic technical troubleshooting, and daily preventive maintenance checks; report complex problems to biomedical engineering or suppliers.
- Implement and record quality control : Conduct internal QC, record results, participate in external quality assessments/proficiency tests (EQA), and investigate non-conformities and take corrective actions.
- Timely notification of important results : Informing clinical teams (ICU), OT, Cath Lab) of transient and urgent results through designated channels and recording acceptance documents.
- Complete traceability and document retention : Maintain test records, reagent batch/expiration date logs, equipment maintenance logs, temperature logs (cold chain) and Health Information System/Laboratory Information System (HMIS/LIS) entries in English for audit and reporting.
- Inventory and reagent cold chain management : Monitoring stock levels, forecasting consumables, stock rotation, reporting expiration dates, and submitting procurement requests on time.
- Training and supervision of junior staff : Train junior laboratory staff and phlebotomists, maintain competency records, and instruct in sampling, processing, POCT, and safety procedures.
- Coordination with blood bank and clinical teams : Cross-match coordination, ensuring blood availability for assigned lists and maintaining track of transfusion related supplies/kits.
Implement biosafety and laboratory safety: safe handling and disposal of infectious specimens and needles, HBV vaccination compliance, participation in laboratory inspections and participation in shift rotation to support urgent OT/ICU tests.
Job Requirements:
Required :
- Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology or Medical Laboratory Science (BMLT / BSc MLT).
- Current professional registration/license.
- Basic Life Saving (BLS) certification is desirable.
Preferred :
- Advanced training/certification in clinical biochemistry, hematology, blood transfusion technology or point-of-care testing.
- Experience in hospital laboratories with cardiac/ICU-based tests or blood bank coordination.
Minimum experience
- At least 3 years of clinical laboratory experience in a hospital setting; at least 18-24 months of experience performing routine and emergency tests in the fields of hematology/biochemistry/coagulation/ABG is preferred.
