Job Summary

  • Linux/Unix Administrator is responsible for the efficient and effective administration of enterprise systems and applications in support of the AWCC IT department mission and to provide daily technical assistance for maintaining the AWCC Corporate and Secure system to ensure 100% availability of the technology environment. He will work closely with the Systems Administrator to help him provide 24/7 network services for the Corporate Server System and users in all AWCC offices.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Define, maintain, implement, support, and troubleshoot software and hardware for corporate Linux servers and systems, focusing on the Oracle Sun Solaris and Red Hat Enterprise Linux /CentOS/ Ubuntu/Debian/Rocky operating systems.
  • Support the Research, Clinical Development, and Business units by solving problems, writing scripts, and maintaining, and supporting operational resources.
  • Interact with internal customers and IT personnel to assist in problem-solving, administration, project work, and solutions.
  • Provide configuration management, application implementation, server upgrades, software, operating system patches, data backup, and restore for the machines and data within incumbents’ area of responsibility.
  • Ensure that security issues are addressed including unauthorized access and protection of sensitive data.
  • Ensure a high level of service by identifying problems, trends, and areas for improvement.
  • Develop and maintain documents on architecture and configuration.
  • Provide system performance and tuning as well as root cause determination.
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) (in conjunction with Regulatory and Quality Assurance) as required for the UNIX, Linux, and backup and recovery infrastructure.
  • Research new technologies and solutions to meet corporate needs.
  • Assist in developing technical requirements for the interoperability of systems. Monitor systems Logs, messages, and alerts.
  • Ensure system accessibility, functionality, and stability through administration. Supports the enterprise production environment.
  • Implement multi-site solutions across the country, focused on security, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Perform administration across the enterprise (multiple sites) utilizing industry practices. (Administration includes user setup, setting of permissions, managing passwords, and installing new software releases)
  • Perform system upgrades, evaluate, and install software and security patches.
  • Install, support, and maintain servers, operating systems, and applications.
  • Maintains hardware and OS health of all assigned systems.
  • Supports installing, loading, and configuring systems, connectivity issues, performing server upgrades, and migration to new system-level software. Upgrades security and other OS patches promptly.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on operating systems and hardware.
  • Maintain and review logs to ensure the health and security of systems.
  • Monitor/log network vital signs to avert system problems before they occur.
  • Support and train other server administrators in the organization.
  • Communicate with the staff, vendors, and customers in a courteous and professional.
  • Responsible for installing the necessary procedures and security tools. He/she works with the Data Network Engineer and other personnel/departments to analyze hardware requirements and alternatives and make acquisition recommendations.
  • Upgrade the software installed on the server, including upgrading virus software and code upgrades.
  • Maintain system security by actively identifying faults and vulnerable areas within the system’s architecture. This part of the job requires extensive knowledge of viruses and other sources of the system vulnerability and requires the Linux administrator to proactively develop protections, particularly when deploying system-wide changes that can open new vulnerabilities.
  • In addition to maintaining Linux systems and servers, Linux administrators also monitor system performance to prevent slowdowns and crashes. He/ She may examine daily traffic logs and reports or receive direct reports from end users. If the Linux administrator notices potential issues or recurring problems within the system, he/she develops and deploys solutions so that the system remains usable for all personnel.
  • Ability to work with Linux-friendly applications and able to troubleshoot them.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science.
  • Must have 3 to 4 years of relevant work experience (2 year’s experience for a master’s degree).
  • LINUX Certifications: RHEL/Oracle/RHCSA/Linux+ CompTIA.
  • The main IT certification exams are through Microsoft MCSE, Cisco, CompTIA Server+, VMware Technology, and Redhat, Most of these exams test the applicant’s skills regarding the administration of UNIX or Windows servers, including knowledge of RAID (redundant array of independent disks), systems recovery, command-line tools, and troubleshooting malfunctioning networks.
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux: RedHat, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Rocky Linux, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with MySQL and/or MariaDB.
  • Familiarity with VMWare and SAN management and concepts.
  • Expert in Shell, Perl, and/or Python scripting.
  • Solid knowledge of protocols such as DNS, HTTP, LDAP, SMTP, and SNMP.
  • Additional Linux certifications (RHCT, RHCE, and LPIC) will be considered an advantage.
  • Applicant must possess some knowledge of computers and electronics, computer/digital technology, or related fields.
  • Technical certification is preferred.
  • Willing to relocate or travel to any Region.
