The International Assistance Mission (IAM) is an International Non-Government Organization registered in Switzerland (registration #CH-660-1239000-6) and Afghanistan (registration #001). IAM is one of the oldest NGOs in Afghanistan.

IAM established the NOOR (National Organization for Ophthalmic Rehabilitation) Eye Care Programme in 1966 with the goal of providing high quality and affordable access to eye care to the people of Afghanistan.

Purpose of the organization

The International Assistance Mission (IAM) is serving the people of Afghanistan through capacity building in the sectors of Health and Economical Development.

NOOR Eye Care Training Centre is a project of IAM which provides affordable eye care service and training of eye care professional for the people of Afghanistan

Job Description:

  1. Key responsibilities:
    1. At all time when on duty, wear the hospital uniform provided. Staff are responsible to keep their uniforms clean and repaired.
    2. Always wear appropriate surgical attire while working in the Operating Room.
    3. Follow all written protocol and anesthesia guidelines.

Preoperatively

    1. Evaluate all GA patients pre-operatively on rounds.
    2. Review papers of physical exam and lab result of general anesthesia patients on the ward on the day prior to surgery, using pre-operative protocol. Record findings on the general anesthesia record and discuses abnormal results with the surgeon.
    3. Reinforce preoperative instructions for patients and family.
    4. Ensure that written surgical consent haw been given.
    5. Administrator or order pre-medication and LA fluid pre-loads with ward nurse.

Intraoperatively:

      1. Checking file of the patients before the operation starts
    1. Local anesthesia – Assist surgeons with local anesthesia in a timely manner.
    2. General anesthesia – Follow pre-anesthesia set-up protocol for equipment, oxygen cylinders, drugs, and supplies.
        • Give fluid pre-load to replace NPO losses according to fluid management protocol
        • Using NETC anesthesia protocol for adults and children, administer anesthetic induction and recovery in a safe, calm, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
        • Treat for nausea and vomiting prophylactically.
        • Monitor circulation and respiratory stat in every five minutes during anesthesia, as according to NETC anesthesia protocol.
        • Maintain record on GA sheet.
        • Intervene quickly in case of an emergency.

Postoperatively.

      1. Ensure safe recovery through maintenance of open airway, hemodynamic stability, and proper positioning.
      2. Monitor patient frequently in recovery area using pulse oximeter, and frequent blood pressure and neurological checks. Record status on GA sheet.
    1. Sign patient off toward nurse only when responsive to verbal stimuli.
    2. Send GA patient on the ward before going home each evening.
    3. Instruct ward nurse in the patient’s postoperative needs.
    4. Check recovering GA patients on the ward before going home each evening.
    5. Maintain an adequate stock of anesthesia supplies, including oxygen, by frequent communication and coordination with the Administrator.
    6. submits equipment for repair or replacement to the OR Charge Nurse.
    7. Filling patient’s information on OT registration book or computer on free time
    8. Perform night, holiday, and weekend on- call status.
    9. Every experienced employee is responsible to cooperate and train the subordinate staff, OTTP students and other people that are outside the program and coming for training.
    10. Assisting the OT nurse in free time.
    11. Assist with other needs in the OR as necessary.

Job Requirements:

  1. Qualifications    
  2. Successful completion of nursing anesthetist programs or Anesthesia specialty from medical university.
  3. Experience in all kinds of general anesthesia
  4. Desire to keep learning and improve skills
  5. Reasonable fluency in spoken Dari and Pashto
  6. Carefulness and precision in work

2.Basic skills:

  1. Fluency in written and spoken Dari and good in Pashto and English
  2. At least 4 years’ experience in general anesthesia in an accredited hospital.
