Job Description:

Overview: as a peer worker for our DICs outreach project, you will be instrumental in providing vital support and assistance to individuals within female in the DICs who are grappling with substance abuse issues. Leveraging your own lived experiences, you will offer empathetic guidance, understanding, and practical strategies to aid in their recovery journey.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Peer support in female in DICs: Provide compassionate one-on-one peer support to incarcerated women struggling with substance abuse issues in female prisons. Utilize your personal experiences to foster connection, understanding, and empowerment, aiding them in navigating their path toward recovery.
  2. Outreach in DICs (Drop-in-Centers): extend peer support services support services to individuals seeking assistance with substance abuse issues at DICs. Engage with clients in a non-judgmental manner, offering empathy, guidance, and resources to support their journey toward recovery and well-being.
  3. Group Facilitation: Assist in facilitating peer-led support groups or workshops both within female prisons and DICs. Foster a supportive and inclusive environment where participants can share their experiences, learn from one another, and develop effective coping mechanisms.
  4. Advocacy and Resource Navigation: Advocate for the needs and rights of incarcerated individuals and DIC clients facing substance abuse challenges. Collaborate with clients to identify barriers to recovery and facilitate access to appropriate resources and services, both within the correctional system and the community.
  5. Education and Outreach: Conduct outreach activities within female prisons and the community to raise awareness about substance abuse issues and available support services. Provide education, information, and resources to promote understanding and reduce stigma surrounding substance abuse.

Qualifications:

  • Lived experience with substance abuse and/or involvement with the criminal justice system is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those in DICs settings.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality and establish appropriate boundaries while providing support.
  • Previous experience with peer support, advocacy, or outreach work is highly valued.
  • Knowledge of community resources and support services related to substance abuse and criminal justice is advantageous.

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional education or training in mental health, social work, or related field is preferred.
  • Completion of a peer support specialist training program or certification is desirable but not mandatory.

Working conditions:

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends to accommodate client needs or participate in outreach events.
  • Travel may be required to visit DICs or attend meetings and events within the community.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional education or training in mental health, social work, or related field is preferred.
  • Completion of a peer support specialist training program or certification is desirable but not mandatory.
