Mission and objectives
UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. It works globally to make the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals a reality for women and girls and stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on four strategic priorities: • Women lead, participate in and benefit equally from governance systems • Women have income security, decent work and economic autonomy • All women and girls live a life free from all forms of violence • Women and girls contribute to and have greater influence in building sustainable peace and resilience, and benefit equally from the prevention of natural disasters and conflicts and humanitarian action. UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality, and in all deliberations and agreements linked to the 2030 Agenda. The entity works to position gender equality as fundamental to the Sustainable Development Goals, and a more inclusive world.

Context
In Bangladesh, UN Women supports the government on the implementation of commitments to international normative standards on gender equality and women’s human rights. UN Women’s work is guided by the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2022-2026) and the corresponding UN Women Bangladesh Strategy Note (2022-2026). The country strategy focuses on strengthening the national structures and mechanisms for gender mainstreaming in policies, plans and budgets; supporting efforts to prevent and eliminate violence against women; promoting women’s access to decent and safe work; promoting policies and government investment in women’s empowerment and resilience building in the context of climate change, humanitarian crisis as well as other threats to peace and security. UN Women works with a range of stakeholders in Bangladesh including the government, civil society and women’s organizations, youth, UN agencies and donors, to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Gender-Responsive Governance programme at UN Women Bangladesh focuses on support to the government on: i) national budgeting and planning; ii) normative frameworks; iii) gender statistics; and iv) women’s leadership. UN Women in Bangladesh supports the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Ministry of Finance to reinforce government’s ongoing GRB mechanism to ensure adequate financing for gender equality. This includes the development of trainings, guidelines, and tools for government officials on gender-responsive planning and budgeting, as well as monitoring and evaluation to measure progress of GRB interventions in the country. UN Women in Bangladesh provides technical and capacity building support to the Government of Bangladesh to integrate Beijing Platform of Action, CEDAW and its Concluding Observations, Commission of the Status of Women recommendations and gender equality related commitments of the SDGs into the national legislation, national and sectoral planning and budgeting process. In coordination with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), UN Women implements the global Flagship Programme Initiative (FPI), Making Every Woman and Girl Count. The second phase of the programme, building on the existing work from Phase I, aims to increase capacity towards monitoring gender-related SDGs through both building an enabling environment for gender data and increasing data production and use. The programme will support the regular collection of gender statistics to reduce gender data gaps for SDGs indicators. This partner-ship also aims to strengthen BBS’s institutional capacity to produce gender statistics to meet the requirements of SDGs and the 8th Five-Year Plan (8FYP). Working in partnership with women’s rights organizations, UN Women in Bangladesh supports women’s participation, representation, and leadership in public life guided by the international commitments such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform for Action. In line with the Leaving No One Behind (LNOB) principles, UN Women leverages its convening power to ensure that voices of the most vulnerable women and grassroots women are considered and prioritized by decision makers when formulating legislation and policies.
