Mission and objectives
UNDP’s mandate is to end poverty, build democratic governance, rule of law, and inclusive institutions. We advocate for change, and connect countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has partnered with Bangladesh ever since its birth and through its remarkable journey from a war-ravaged economy to a middle-income country. It remains a catalyst in Bangladesh’s journey from Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. UNDP assists in building institutions and helps strengthen institutional capacities through people-centric, pro-poor, inclusive and sustainable policy making and development governance.

Context
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are core principles at UNDP: we value diversity as an expression of the multiplicity of nations and cultures where we operate, we foster inclusion as a way of ensuring all personnel are empowered to contribute to our mission, and we ensure equity and fairness in all our actions. Taking a ‘leave no one behind’ approach to our diversity efforts means increasing represen-tation of underserved populations. People who identify as belonging to marginalized or excluded populations are strongly encouraged to apply. Learn more about working at UNDP including our val-ues and inspiring stories. UNDP does not tolerate sexual exploitation and abuse, any kind of harassment, including sexual har-assment, and discrimination. All selected candidates will, therefore, undergo rigorous reference and background checks. Bangladesh is considered one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, being ranked seventh on the Global Climate Risk Index. The country faces climate-induced natural disasters due to its geographical location and low-lying topography. This, coupled with high population density and poverty, creates a challenging situation for the country, particularly in relation to water and food security. Climate-induced disasters are a significant obstacle to the country’s development. From 2014-2020, major climate-related disasters resulted in 1,053 deaths, 4.6 million houses damaged, and $4.1 billion in economic losses. Hence, enhancing climate-adaptive livelihoods is crucial for strengthening the adaptive capacity of Bangladesh’s vulnerable communities. Despite improvements in the adaptive capacity of these at-risk communities, there is a need for more systematic interventions to mitigate or transfer climate-related risks on climate-adaptive livelihoods. The Local Government Division of Bangladesh has been implementing the Local Government Initiative on Climate Change (LoGIC) project, with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), Embassy of Sweden and Embassy of Denmark to promote local action on climate change adaptation at scale. The main outcome of this project is to improve and implement inclusive local-level planning and strengthen financing mechanisms for community-based climate change adaptation solutions through local governments. Through the Climate Resilience Fund (CRF) financing mechanism, the project aims to improve the adaptive capacity of the community by supporting the implementation of climate-adaptive livelihood options (CALOs). Over time, CALO practice has transitioned from individual practice to group settings, to finally under cooperatives. This position will be responsible for providing all sorts of support required for smooth implementation of Climate Resilience Fund (CRF) and will work closely and under the supervisor of the CRF lead.

Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Adaptation Innovation Analyst, the UN University Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • As part of the Climate Resilience Fund (CRF) team, the youth volunteer will work closely with the CRF team and assist to produce knowledge materials such as reports and small summaries as required. • Support dissemination of information and knowledge sharing within the CRF team. • Support the CRF team lead on other climate change related issues. • Assist in fine-tuning presentations as deemed necessary for internal or external reporting. • Support the CRF team lead in overall project implementation. • Contribute to overall development of the CRF component by identifying gaps during work and addressing them. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
