About UN Careers-Forestry Application Developer/Italy/2023
The position is part of the National Forest Monitoring and MRV, Platforms, and Analytic Tools Team, which assists FAO member nations with all aspects of forest monitoring, provides accurate data for national forest and land use-related policy development, planning, and sustainable management, and helps them meet international reporting requirements under the Paris Agreement and UNFCCC. The Team additionally provides technical assistance to nations on matters pertaining to National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMS), Restoration Monitoring in support of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and the development of high-quality, low-cost Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV).
Open Foris and SEPAL are created and maintained by the NFM Team (Digital Public Goods for forest and land use monitoring). It collaborates closely with the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) Teams and the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) Team.
A small team of Google volunteers and open-source contributors has concurrently collaborated closely with partners at a number of public benefit organizations to design and iterate on a prototype of an open-source, map-based data collection platform (GROUND) made to address the needs of Geo for Environment impact partners. The Google team intends to put the open-source software into production with the aim of operationalizing GROUND after completing two case studies and one internal pilot demonstrating GROUND’s ability to produce a good effect.
Required Qualifications of UN Careers-Forestry Application Developer/Italy/2023
Education:
University degree in Informatics, Computer Science, Geospatial Engineering or a related discipline
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of experience with software development in Java and/or Kotlin, RxJava2 as well as Python. Experience in API and/or application development.
Languages:
Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of French or Spanish. For PSA, working knowledge of English would suffice.
