About UN jobs Asia-ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICER
The mission will be governed by ECA’s five strategic directions, which are: advancing ECA’s position as a leading knowledge institution that builds on its special position and privilege to bring global solutions to the continent’s problems and bring local solutions to the continent; creating macroeconomic and structural policy options to speed up economic diversification and job creation; designing and implementing novel financing models for infrastructure, and for health care.
This position is based in Lusaka, Zambia, office of the Southern Africa Sub-regional Office of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The Chief Inclusive Industrialization Section, Southern Africa Sub-regional Office, is who the Economic Affairs Officer reports.
Responsibilities
ECONOMIC AND/OR SECTOR ANALYSIS:
•observes developments and lessons learned in the fields of regional integration, international and regional commerce, trade statistics, and capacity building for the creation and dissemination of data on trade, finance, investment, and technology for use in policymaking.
•helps to strengthen sub-regional economic institutions, such as the Southern African cross-border trade initiative, so that member states can realize their full economic potential.
•creates the qualitative data and socioeconomic analysis required for the ad hoc or recurring assignments that are defined.
• technical papers and analytical studies on specific global, regional, national, or sectoral aspects of economic development needes for the construction of the curriculum.
•identifies and evaluates policy recommendations produced elsewhere that are related to the issues given.
•attends meetings at the national, regional, and international levels to learn more and to interact with peers from other institutions.
•helps with the planning and administration of expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on development-related topics.
• Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.
Required Qualifications UN jobs Asia-ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICER
Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may acceptes in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
It takes at least five years of steadily increasing responsibility in economic research and analysis, policy creation, the use of economic concepts in development initiatives, or a closely related field.
It would be ideal to have a thorough knowledge of and awareness of Southern Africa.
Strong publication history is ideal.
Languages
Fluency in the English language (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the French language is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
