UNMISS works closely with the South Sudanese government and other stakeholders to promote human rights, good governance, and sustainable development. Its mandate includes protecting civilians, monitoring and investigating human rights abuses, facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and supporting the implementation of the peace agreement.

The mission is led by a Special Representative of the Secretary-General and has a military, police, and civilian component. The military component is responsible for protecting civilians, monitoring the ceasefire, and supporting the peace process. The police component is responsible for training and advising the South Sudanese police, and the civilian component is responsible for supporting governance, human rights, and development initiatives.
