About UN Jobs-Irrigation and Water Specialist
The primary goal of the FAO country offices, which are led by an FAO Representative, is to help governments develop policies, programs, and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, as well as to help the development of the agricultural, fisheries, and forestry sectors and the sustainable use of their natural resources. FAO Nigeria is helping the Nigerian government transform and strengthen agri-food systems to be more sustainable. The position holder will work for the FAO Representation in Nigeria and be responsible for assisting with the implementation of the FAO Nigeria Country Programme Framework, with a focus on agroforestry, water resource management, and other climate-smart agricultural practices, policies, and programs.
The Irrigation and Water Specialist works closely with the Programme Leads and FAO technical officers in the Sub-regional Office for West Africa (SFW), Regional FAO Office for Africa (RAF), and Headquarters, reporting to the FAO Representative (FAOR) and under the direct supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative (Programs).
The primary duty is to assist in the implementation of climate-smart agricultural practices, policies, and programs in the areas of agroforestry, water resource management, and land resource management, employing creative methods for resource mobilization and private sector involvement.
UN Jobs-Irrigation and Water Specialist Requirments
Education:
- Advanced university degree in environmental and natural resource management, irrigation and agricultural engineering, or a related subject.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the area of water, irrigation, and agricultural land management issues at the national level.
Languages:
- Little understanding of any of the major languages of Nigeria and working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English (Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo, Pidgin).
