Job Summary

Position About your organization:

UNODC conducts an annual Afghanistan opium survey that also includes a “socio-economic survey” to understand the drivers, causes and consequences of opium poppy cultivation. One part of this survey is a large-scale, nationally representative village survey conducted in rural areas of all provinces in Afghanistan. The purpose of the survey is to conduct research on the overall socio-economic situation of farmers, especially after the ban on illicit crop cultivation implemented in 2022 in the country. In each village, structured interviews are conducted using two different questionnaires: one for the village headman and another one for farmers.

About Job:

The purpose of this assignment is to support the AFGF98 project to implement a “Village Survey” through data collection in 34 provinces of Afghanistan. The field surveyor, under the general guidance of the UNODC Country Representative and under the immediate supervision of the AFGF98 Programme Officer, will facilitate and support the overall implementation of the study using the methodological approach proposed by the UNODC and collect data from households (respondents).

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Identify respondents and administer individual questionnaires through interviews and collect required data through data collection tools.

• Support the Field Coordinator to prepare data collection schedules and plan the logistics essential for accurate and timely data collection, including travel and accommodation.

• Participate in training on the survey objectives, methodology, fieldwork approaches, and data collection tools (e.g. Kobo toolbox and paper questionnaires).

• Strictly follow the sampling methodology, technical guidance, and interview protocol as per the training session.

• Administer interviews assigned by the field coordinator within the assigned timeframe.

• Ensure that questionnaires are thoroughly completed and meet high quality standards.

• Observe a strong sense of respect and confidentiality while administering the interview.

• Ensure that the completed questionnaires are appropriately submitted through Kobo.

• Maintain up to date records and status of progress to ensure consistency and completeness of all survey questionnaires.

• Provide daily report on findings related to the field situation including political, social as well as security to the field coordinator.

• Support the Field Coordinator to prepare and submit final survey report highlighting/summarizing all activities in the field and other major findings.

• Provide assistance in any other issues related to implementation of this research.

Job Requirements

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in social or political sciences, demography, geography, agronomy, or any other relevant field

Experience:

• 1-2 years of experience in household survey or any type of survey and data collection.

• Experience with government, UN organizations and donor agencies in Afghanistan is an advantage.

• Good contextual knowledge of local issues, organizational relationships, social and cultural constraints and realities, and environmental conditions.

• Knowledge in using CAPI data collection tools. Strong preference for prior experience in Kobo toolbox application.

• Working experience in MS Word and Excel.

• Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.

Language Requirement:

• Strong knowledge in written and spoken English and excellent knowledge of national languages (Pashto and Dari) are required. Translation of document to local languages will be added asset.
