It was established in 1944 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The World Bank consists of two institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA).
The IBRD provides loans and other financial assistance to middle-income countries, while the IDA provides grants and low-interest loans to the world’s poorest countries. In addition to financial assistance, the World Bank also provides technical expertise and advice to help countries build capacity in areas such as infrastructure, health, education, and governance.
The World Bank is governed by its member countries, with the United States being the largest shareholder. The organization has faced criticism for its lending practices, which some argue have led to increased debt burdens for developing countries, as well as for its focus on market-oriented economic policies. However, the World Bank continues to play a major role in global development efforts.
