IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship 2026 (Fully Funded) in the Netherlands

The IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship 2026 in the Netherlands is now accepting applications. This fully funded fellowship is open to all international applicants in the Netherlands. Promoting innovative research and cross-border cooperation is the aim. Applications for this exceptional opportunity are encouraged from candidates in a range of areas. The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) encourages critical, humanistic, and collaborative work on, with, within, and beyond Asia. Our platforms and programs are organized around five interrelated fundamental priorities: research, education and pedagogy, civic engagement, network building, and communication and dissemination.

One fully funded 12-month fellowship, the World Fellowship 2026, is available from the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS). The fellowship is divided into three phases and runs from October 2026 to October 2027. One of the chosen co-host universities will host the second phase for three to five months after the initial six months at Leiden University in the Netherlands. The IIAS in Leiden, the Netherlands, will host the last stage. The scholarship aims to encourage researchers in Asian studies from around the globe.

Eligibility Criteria of IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship:

This scholarship requires the following qualification:

  • Candidates may be from any nation.
  • International researchers in their early to mid-career stages are the target audience.
  • If you don’t have a PhD, your defense must happen before February 15, 2026 (with university approval).
  • You must arrive in the first week of October 2026 and be available from October 2026 to October 2027.
  • For the term of the fellowship, you will need a formal release if you are employed. It is not possible to have more than one job contract or fellowship at the same time.

They are seeking scholars whose research will contribute to a more comprehensive and interconnected understanding of Asia’s place in the world. The IIAS thematic clusters must be reflected in the applicants’ research.

  • The IIAS Fellowship’s structure:
  • There are three phases to the IIAS fellowship:
  • Six months at IIAS in Leiden, Netherlands, during Phase 1
  • Participants will engage in a variety of activities with IIAS and its partners around Europe, including discussions, project collaboration, publication, and more.

Phase 2: In one of the co-hosting institutes for three to five months:

  • Surabaya, Indonesia’s Airlangga Institute of Indian Ocean Crossroads (AIIOC)
  • Portuguese cities of Lisbon, Coimbra, and Braga are home to the Center for Research in Anthropology (CRIA).
  • Federal University of Bahia’s Centro de Estudos Afro-Orientais (CEAO) of Salvador, Brazil
  • Pondicherry, India’s French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP)
  • Thailand’s Kasetsart University (KU) in Bangkok
  • Malmö University’s Institute for Urban Research (IUR) in Malmö, Sweden
  • Germany’s University of Erfurt’s Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies
  • Delhi, India’s Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies
  • Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) School of Cultural Resources (Taipei, Taiwan)
  • Madrid, Spain’s Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
  • Environment, Health, and Societies in International Research Laboratories (Dakar, Senegal)
  • Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)
  • Heidelberg University’s “Worldmaking” initiative (Heidelberg, Germany)

Phase 3: Go back to Leiden, Netherlands’ IIAS

  • Once you’re back in Leiden, you’ll discuss your co-hosting experience.
