Applications for the 2025 Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon PhD Scholarships are being accepted. These PhD scholarships are fully supported and open to all international candidates. Students are encouraged to apply if they wish to pursue a PhD program overseas on a sponsored scholarship.

The Helmholtz–Zentrum Hereon, a world-renowned research organization in Germany, is currently welcoming creative minds from all over the world to apply for a fully supported PhD post in their Institute of Hydrogen Technology in an era where innovation advances sustainability. This is your opportunity to participate in a DFG-funded study that is exposing the atomic-scale mysteries of high-performance magnesium (Mg) alloys, which are the building blocks of sustainable, resilient, and lightweight materials of the future. One essential element of the energy shift is hydrogen. It requires the most efficient production, transportation, and storage of hydrogen. The design of materials, fixed energy systems, green hydrogen through photoelectrochemistry, and mobile hydrogen storage systems are the main areas of interest for the researchers.

Eligibility:

  • It is essential to have a solid understanding of metallurgy, slip/twinning mechanisms, and the mechanical properties of metallic materials.
  • Within the bounds of the law, preference will be given to those with severe disabilities and those who are similar to them and equally quaHow to Applylified for the position.
  • a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • It will be beneficial to have prior knowledge of micro-compression, SEM-based methods, and magnesium alloys.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate and work independently.

Goals:

  • Finding the atomic-scale mechanisms that contribute to the remarkable strength and ductility of magnesium-rare earth (RE)-based alloys is the primary objective of the research.
  • This will be achieved by integrating advanced microstructural characterisation techniques (EBSD, EDX, SAXS, TEM) with ex situ/in situ nanoindentation-based techniques (micro-tensile/compression).
  • The results of the inquiry will be crucial for enhancing existing Mg-RE alloys and will pave the way for the development of new RE-free Mg alloy systems and digital twins.
