Description of Opportunity

Highly qualified individuals are chosen to serve as Junior Fellows at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo by the Office of the Rector at the United Nations University. Junior fellows are selected twice a year through a competitive application procedure. Applications are encouraged from graduate students interested in UNU and other UN initiatives. Providing graduate students and young professionals with an environment that is exciting, rigorous, and gratifying is one of the program’s main goals.

Program Goals:

The Rector’s Office Junior Fellows Internship Program accomplishes the following goals:

to encourage communication and interaction between young professionals, academics, and UNU.to familiarize junior fellows with the operations of UNU and the procedures of the Rector’s Office.to give aspiring professionals the opportunity to work in a UN organization and obtain extensive real-world experience.to assist the Rector’s Office in its operations and to introduce young professionals to the administrative work environment.

Eligibilities of Junior Fellows Internship:

The following requirements must be met by each qualifying applicant, but they are not exhaustive.

The applicant:

Has completed postgraduate studies (master’s or PhD), preferably in a field related to the University’s activities, recently (within two years of application) or is currently enrolled in such programs.Is under 32 years old and, at the time of application, a minor.Must not have worked in a relevant position for more than five years.Possesses native or advanced proficiency in spoken and written English.Possesses outstanding research, analytical, and writing skills.Able to build and preserve fruitful working connections with people of different backgrounds.Displays originality and resourcefulness when addressing problems.Possessing exceptional computer skills, including a solid grasp of how to utilize Microsoft Office products (a high level of Excel competency and experience with ICT tools are plus).Exhibits a clear interest in the United Nations’ and, more specifically, the United Nations University’s work.Possess a valid English language test, such as the TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC).

How Do I Apply?

Three steps are included in the application process.

Step 1: Assessing an applicant’s motivation, background, and fitness for the role based on their credentials is the aim of the initial application round. The next set of documents must be turned in in order for Stage 1 to proceed.

Step 2: After being shortlisted, candidates are interviewed over the phone or via Zoom to find out more about their motivations.
