About NGO Jobs in Yemen-Research Assistant

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) Division is looking for a Research Assistant to help with the monitoring and reporting of human rights abuses in Yemen. The chosen applicant will reside in Amman or Beirut and will work under the supervision of Yemen and Bahrain researchers.

The chosen applicant will be required to put in time at the office. In both the hiring process and the onboarding process for this position, we strive to be as accommodating and helpful as we can.

Responsibilities:

  • provide the Yemen and Bahrain Researcher with research, advocacy, and administrative support;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local actors and activists, utilizing existing networks of local rights organizations and activists to increase HRW’s monitoring capacity and informational access; arrange meetings with NGOs, government representatives, and others who can provide information about violations of human rights;
  • Help the Yemen and Bahrain Researcher in gathering and evaluating data from a wide range of sources, including as governments, local media, NGOs, victims, witnesses, and journalists, in order to monitor the state of human rights and document abuses;
  • aid the researcher on Yemen and Bahrain in locating chances for local advocacy;
  • aid the researcher from Yemen and Bahrain in pursuing particular instances of human rights breaches;
  • Provide written analyses and write-ups of interviews under the direction of the Yemen and Bahrain Researcher, as well as, where necessary, initial drafts of briefing papers, letters, news releases, submissions to international organizations, etc.;
  • aid the researcher on Yemen and Bahrain in creating papers for discussion with government representatives, NGOs, international organizations, and other outside partners;
  • Be a full partner with the Yemen and Bahrain Researcher in managing local logistical issues, such as finding drivers, fixers, translators;
  • provide security advice to the Yemen and Bahrain researcher, especially with regard to field trips;

NGO Jobs in Yemen-Research Assistant Requirments

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in international relations, law, journalism, social sciences, or a field related to the function’s country is necessary, or equivalent work experience in these fields.

Experience:

  • It is necessary to have at least one year of experience working in an office setting or helping with field research. It is particularly desired if you have experience in human rights, law, political science, development, or journalism.
