The Head of the Syria Regional Response Hub takes charge of the Syria Regional Humanitarian Response Hub, which serves as the coordination mechanism for UNFPA’s humanitarian responses to the crisis in Syria and the influx of refugees into neighboring countries, under the general supervision of the ASRO Regional Director. Amman, Jordan, is the location of the position.
The United Nations boosted its humanitarian response operations from its beginnings in 2011 as the crisis in Syria escalated, affecting nations[1] in the Arab States region and Turkey. Amman, Jordan, has become the focal point for inter-agency coordination. A Syria Regional Response Center, or “the Hub,” was established in Amman in 2013 as UNFPA strengthened its capacity for reaction. The Hub has enhanced the coordination of activities among the numerous UNFPA country offices, increased UNFPA’s visibility, and mobilized major donor funding.
The Hub has acted as a conduit between the many offices providing aid inside Syria, including through cross-border modalities, since the creation of the “Whole of Syria” concept. The Hub has added the responsibility of creating, overseeing, and reporting on a number of significant multi-country donor projects for both the response to the refugee crisis and the entire of Syria. As a result, the staff of the Hub has increased to include a GBV Coordinator, a humanitarian data specialist, a regional grants coordinator, a CVA specialist, a communications officer, and an admin/finance officer. Each of these individuals reports to the Head of the Syria Regional Response Hub.
The regional evaluation of the Syria Regional Response Hub found that the hub produced high returns in terms of mobilizing significant multi-year funding, advocacy and representation, raising the profile of gender-based violence programming as a life-saving intervention, and coordination for the Whole of Syria approach. It also increased the credibility of UNFPA as a humanitarian actor.
But, it also concluded that the hub should make additional investments in regional knowledge sharing and the sharing of lessons learned.
As a result, the center has taken the lead in the region’s humanitarian knowledge management. Products from the UNFPA Knowledge Series are designed to give all participants in the humanitarian community access to straightforward, practical information or methods that help improve humanitarian responses. They are intended to operate as useful tools that inform responses or allow actors to modify successful techniques to suit their situations. They are based on lessons learnt from UNFPA activities in the Arab States Area.
10 years minimum of relevant professional experience in a progressively responsible manner in planning, devising, and carrying out humanitarian initiatives in crisis situations, and ideally, participation at high-level humanitarian forums.
