About UN Jobs in USA-Technical Officer

The Department of Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Health (CDE) promotes, coordinates, and puts into action technical cooperation activities that are technically sound and appropriate for the political and sociocultural context in which they are carried out. These activities are directed toward the surveillance, prevention, control, and elimination of communicable diseases and zoonosis. By offering normative guidance, advancing the use of evidence-based interventions, and encouraging alliances that strengthen national capacity and enhance the effectiveness of international collaboration, it seeks to have a long-lasting impact on health. This is accomplished through improved health information coverage, analysis, and quality at all levels.

DUTIES:

The incumbent is accountable for, but not exclusively for, the following assigned duties under the direct supervision of the Unit Chief, Neglected, Tropical and Vector-borne Diseases (CDE/VT) and the technical direction of the Chief, Equality, Gender and Cultural Diversity:

  1. Provide technical support to strengthen the capacity of Member States to implement WHO and PAHO policies, plans and technical recommendations for elimination of diseases including the Neglected Tropical Diseases Roadmap 2021–2030 and PAHO´s “Disease Elimination Initiative”; ensure the mainstreaming of the lines of action and strategies of the PAHO’s “Gender Equality Policy” in implementation processes;
  2. Provide technical support for the development and dissemination of best practices on gender mainstreaming strategies to develop gender-responsive plans, programs, initiatives, and policies for the elimination of trachoma, Neglected Infectious Diseases (NID), and other communicable diseases;
  3. Collaborate with the Equity, Gender, and Cultural Diversity office in the integration of gender equality approaches in the design and analysis of regional, national, and subnational projects, plans programs, and policies to eliminate trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases;
  4. Provide technical support to national and subnational health authorities for the implementation of gender-responsive approaches for the elimination of trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases.
  5. Coordinate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of technical and scientific knowledge related to gender equity issues at the regional, national, and subnational levels for the elimination of trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases;
  6. Provide technical support to Member States to complete gender equality analysis for the elimination of trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases to better understand specific and contextual gender dynamics and barriers to access to and demand for health services;
  7. Provide technical support to Member States to monitor and evaluate changes in gender equality issues along with the implementation of actions to eliminate trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases at the national and sub-national levels;
  8. Provide technical support to Member States to strengthen health information systems to allow collection, analysis, and utilization of disaggregated data by sex and qualitative data on gender equality issues to monitor changes and support decision-making on the elimination of trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases;
  9. Provide technical support to Member States to strengthen the capacity of local health workers and women’s groups to provide integrated services offered with a gender equality focus for the elimination of trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases;
  10. Collaborate and coordinate with PAHO’s interprogrammatic teams and Member States in the production and adaptation of gender-responsive communication and messages to eliminate trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases;
  11. Provide technical support to Member States to mainstream gender equality strategies within integrated packages of interventions such as SAFE (surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness, environmental improvement), WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), and MMDP (morbidity management, and disability prevention), among others.
  12. Participate in the annual planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of grants supporting PAHO in the elimination of trachoma, actively involving PAHO country offices and Member States ensuring that the gender equality approaches are included. Includes preparing annual implementation plans by country, follow-up and monitoring the implementation of activities and funding, preparing and completing reports;
  13. Coordinate with the Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Health Department (CDE) and Equity, Gender, and Cultural Diversity communications team’s activities to produce communication materials (country profiles, website content, social media content, fact sheets, videos, audio messages, and documents, among others) on the gender equality approaches;
  14. Plan, organize, and assist in the implementation of training workshops, and seminars, among others, held in-person or through virtual platforms on gender equality approaches to eliminate trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases. Organize and implement regional forums (meetings) for trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases. Includes participating in international and regional meetings and forums on trachoma and other NID as needed representing the Organization;
  15. Work with WHO’s Collaborating Centers, US CDC, USAID, DFATD, and other bilateral agencies, foundations, NGOs, and other partners and collaborators to support regional efforts on gender equality approaches to eliminate trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases;
  16. Prepare annual and periodic progress reports, situation analyses on gender equality approaches for the elimination of trachoma, NID, and communicable diseases, and other documents with strategic information for dissemination to document the progress of countries towards global and regional diseases elimination and gender equality targets;
  17. Participate and provide technical content for the writing of public health protocols and research proposals on gender equality approaches for the elimination of trachoma, NID, and other communicable diseases; coordinate and ensure their submittal to bioethics committees;

UN Jobs in USA-Technical Officer Requirments

Education:

  • a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in a social science, public policy, or field relating to gender, women’s health, community development, or diversity.
  • A master’s degree in public health or a field closely related to it that includes gender studies, masculinities, gender identities, etc.

Experience:

  • Seven years of combined national and international experience in management, research, teaching, or capacity building in the fields of health and development; at least four of those years should have involved issues of gender equity and equality in the health sector.

Languages:

  • Working knowledge of the other language and very good knowledge of either English or Spanish. Portuguese and/or French language proficiency would be advantageous.
